Atmospheric Monitoring

Know what's in the air before your crew does.

Shaft gas detection systems sample continuously at the face, in declines, and at refuge chambers. CO, CH₄, O₂ deficiency, H₂S — all reported to surface in real time. When a reading climbs, the alarm reaches the surface controller before it reaches the miner.

Impact-Rated PPE

The mountain tests equipment differently than a lab does.

Every helmet, harness, and self-rescuer in the Shaft catalog is rated to the conditions you actually operate in — not the conditions a certification lab simulates. Impact ratings verified at temperature extremes. Harnesses tested at 1.5× rated load. Self-rescuers certified to 45 minutes in 1% CO.

Proximity & Tracking

Every miner. Every heading. Accounted for.

ProximiTrack mesh nodes maintain sub-3-second location updates at depths exceeding 2,000 meters. When an evacuation is called, surface controllers see every miner's last known position, the fastest route to surface, and which refuge chambers are occupied — before the first rescue team descends.

A Century of Progress

Safety Technology Compounds.

Every incident that rewrote the regulations produced equipment that made the next generation safer. Here is the evidence.

Historical black and white photo of early underground mine with timber supports and miners with carbide lamps
1900sThe Canary Era
2,200+US mining fatalities per year, 1910

Before electronic detection, miners relied on canary birds to detect carbon monoxide. When the bird stopped singing, you had seconds to exit. Blackdamp and afterdamp claimed thousands annually.

47%of accidents occurred in low-visibility conditions, 1945 USBM study

Carbide and early electric cap lamps provided 4–6 hours of unreliable light. Batteries failed without warning. Miners navigated declines in near-darkness during shift changes.
